Scrambling

The courses below can be run in most mountain areas of the UK (Scotland, North Wales and The Lake District) however; I run most of my scrambling courses in Skye. The Black Cuillin is the Mecca of all scrambling in the UK. The traverse of the main ridge is often a lifelong ambition of many mountaineers; with its 14 munro’s and 3000 meters of ascent spread over 10km’s.

If you do not see exactly what you want below, then please get in touch. Course content is flexible so if you would like 5 days with a mixture of advanced scrambling and easy rock climbing that is no problem. The length of courses is flexible and normally dependant on your ambitions and experience.

Introduction to Scrambling

Outline – Done some hill walking and started to look at the sharp ridges and rocky buttresses and thought “that looks fun”, then this is the course for you. Over this course you will be introduced to the world of scrambling, with the aim to climb a grade 1 scramble each day.

Content – Over the course you will develop your skills in route choice, guide book interpretation, looking after members of your party without a rope, hazard identification and avoidance, movement techniques, navigation and general hill skills.

Previous Experience – Summer Hill Walking (You should have at least 10 days summer hill walking under your belt and the knowledge that you are not too scared in exposed situations!).

Ratio – 1:4

Advanced Scrambling

Outline – Top end scrambling is a great way to experience the rewards of climbing without all the technical equipment and the slower movement involved in climbing. If you want to tackle some of the UK’s best scrambles and visit parts of the mountains that are not accessible to walkers then this is the course for you.

Content – Over the course you will be introduced to and develop your skills in route choice, guide book interpretation, scrambling and basic climbing rope work, hazard identification and avoidance, movement techniques, navigation and general hill skills.

Previous Experience – Summer Hill Walking with some grade 1 scrambling experience or some rock climbing (you should have done around 10 grade 1 scrambles or around 10 days of easy rock climbing).

Ratio – 1:2

Advanced Scrabling - Learning to Lead

Outline – If you want to start advanced scrambling under your own steam, then this is the course for you. It can be run as a 2 day course, but in reality 4 or 5 would be far better and allow you to really develop your ability and confidence. By the end of the course you should have the skills to go out and safely tackle Grade 2 and 3 scrambles.

Content – Over the course you will develop your knowledge of route choice, guide book interpretation, scrambling and basic climbing rope work, hazard identification and avoidance as well as movement techniques. All this will be done with an instructor close at hand to offer advice and a rope if needed!

Previous Experience – Summer Hill Walking with some grade 1 scrambling experience or some rock climbing (you should have done around 10 grade 1 scrambles or around 10 days of easy rock climbing).

Ratio – 1:2
