‘Climb Now - Work Later'

This is the advertising slogan of DMM the excellent British gear manufacturer, it always makes me smile as I don't have to pick between the two as climbing and mountaineering is my work! I love being in the mountains, be it climbing, walking, scrambling, winter or summer and be it teaching other people or just for fun with friends.

I was lucky enough to be taken out walking in the hills on a regular basis when young by my father and have not looked back. Since leaving school I have walked, climbed, scrambled and skied extensively in the UK, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Canada and Kenya.

After leaving university I went into teaching, and for 7 years taught Geography and Outdoor Education. After 3 years running the Geography Department at Gordonstoun School, I decided I was missing the mountains and spending too much time behind a desk, so I left and set myself up as a freelance climbing instructor.

I hold the Mountain Instructors Certificate (MIC) which is the highest mountaineering qualification in the UK. In the process of getting this award I have completed my Single Pitch Award (SPA), Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Award (ML) and my Mountain Instructors Award (MIA). This equates to 28 days training, 22 days assessment and a minimum of around 300 days walking, scrambling and climbing. If you would like to find out more about these awards please click here. I am also a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and the Scotland Sub Group Coordinator.

Most importantly however, I truly love my job. Call it what you will but, teaching, instructing, coaching or guiding in the outdoors are brilliant. Every day is different as the weather changes, the routes vary and people's abilities, ages and expectations differ.

Please feel free to get in contact with me so that we can discuss how I can help you fulfil your outdoor ambitions. In the unlikely event that I cannot be the one to help you, I will certainly put you in touch with someone who can.
